String Institute

Conservatory Summer Institute

The Conservatory Summer Institute is a 9-day residential high school intensive for students seeking a rigorous artistic experience. Led by Baldwin Wallace University faculty, students have the opportunity to explore life at BW while growing as an artist through classes, private lessons, ensembles, and coaching sessions.

CSI: String Institute is filled with meaningful musical experiences and opportunities to build relationships with BW Conservatory Faculty and other talented young musicians. Students will tackle challenging, mature string repertoire under the mentorship and guidance of experienced string faculty.

Sample Curriculum

  • Daily string ensemble rehearsals
  • Daily small-group sectionals
  • Chamber ensemble rehearsals
  • Daily Dalcroze Eurhythmics classes
  • Career Exploration workshops

CSI: String participants have the option to add on private lessons (new this year - private lessons are not included in the curriculum) with BW faculty, the Audition Preparation Program and/or an Institute Emphasis to the core curriculum.

Enhance Your Experience with the Institute Emphasis Programs

Students may choose to add an Institute Emphasis, designed to allow more focused study in an area of interest. Only one Institute Emphasis may be added to the core curriculum. Options include:

College Audition Preparation Program

Available to rising seniors (graduating 2025) in all institutes.

For rising seniors graduating in 2025, the audition preparation program may be added to the standard CSI experience. The Audition Preparation Program is available on its own or in addition to an emphasis track.

Students who participate in the audition preparation program will engage directly with Matthew Miller, BW Director of Conservatory Admissions. Through hands-on classes, students will gain further insight into the college audition process. In addition, students will work with BW faculty on mock auditions and receive one private lesson with BW faculty.

Space is limited. Students accepted into the program are expected to bring to campus their selection for their college audition already prepared. Students can check with their college of interest for audition recommendations and guidelines.

CSI Registration and Placement Information

The deadline to register for the 2024 String Institute, including the required ensemble audition, is June 1, 2024.
