Safety First

CAS staff have been working in collaboration with Baldwin Wallace University’s Health and Safety Committee and the American Camp Association to carefully set policies that keep students safe while at camp. All guidelines and policies are reflective of extensive research and information provided by the State of Ohio, Centers for Disease Control, peer institutions, and medical experts from the Cleveland Clinic and University Hospitals.

Community Arts School staff have been working in tandem with Conservatory and University leadership in mitigating COVID-19 throughout the academic year and has been highly successful in doing so. Our learnings from this past academic year allow us to be informed and provide the absolute best experience for your camper this summer, while also keeping them safe. 

Conservatory Summer Workshops Safety Guidelines

All staff, faculty, and participants will follow the safety guidelines below throughout camp: 

  • Participants who have knowingly been exposed to COVID-19 within the 10-day period before camp will not be permitted to attend camp. Refunds will be offered to students who are unable to participate in camp due to a positive test or known COVID-19 exposure.  
  • Participants are to monitor their temperature and symptoms at home.  
  • Masks are required across the BW campus and will be worn at all times by campers, staff and faculty. Specialty instrument masks and bell coverings will be provided for woodwind and brass players.  
  • Participants will remain socially distant at a minimum of 6 feet or greater for all camp activities. When playing instruments, the Conservatory protocols for distancing will be implemented as some instruments require greater spacing.  
  • Hand washing and/or hand sanitizing will take place frequently throughout the day.

Our Facilities

Over the past year, considerable changes have been made to BW’s campus to help mitigate the spread of COVID-19. The following upgrades and installations have been made: 

  • 1,000+ wall-mounted and freestanding hand sanitizer dispensers have been installed across campus. 
  • The Conservatory’s heating and cooling system has been equipped with a system-wide ionizer which kills 99% of viruses, bacteria and mold circulating in the air. 
  • Rehearsal halls, classrooms and offices contain portable air purifiers for added air cleaning. 
  • Carefully created room guidelines and schedules ensure proper air-flow and ventilation in all of our indoor spaces.  
  • Reduced capacity limits for all rehearsal spaces and practice rooms based on the type of activity. 
  • Special, piano specific, disinfectant wipes are located at every piano to properly and safely sanitize keys before and after use. 
  • Rehearsal halls have pre-measured floor markings to ensure proper distancing between instruments. 
  • Stairwells have designated directional signage. 
  • Enhanced cleaning on a nightly basis by our professional cleaning staff, especially for high-touch surfaces. 
  • A large tent has been installed on the lawn next to the Conservatory allows for outdoors rehearsals. Additional pop-up tents will be used throughout campus for smaller rehearsals and activities.
