Violin, Cello and Viola Private Lessons and Group Classes for Ages 4 & up.
With careful guidance from specially trained teachers, parents help their children learn to play violin, viola or cello through the same natural process that occurs when their children learn to speak. The establishment of this "Suzuki triangle" provides the stimulation and encouragement that children need to acquire other critical learning skills.
The Baldwin Wallace Suzuki Center includes lessons and group classes for the violin for students ages 4 & up. Lessons and group classes are also available for students starting at age 6 for cello, and age 7 for viola.
- Dr. Suzuki said “Teaching music is not my main purpose. I want to make good citizens. If children hear fine music from the day of their birth and learn to play it, they develop sensitivity, discipline and endurance. They get a beautiful heart.”
- In the Suzuki method, the steps prior to playing an instrument are broken down into small increments similar to a child’s first vocalizations. Games and activities are used in the lessons to provide a fun, nurturing environment in addition to a strong element of family involvement.
- Our long term goals are to help the students play well, to teach them to self-analyze and correct, and eventually to become musically literate while learning to appreciate the beauty of the instrument and its repertoire.
- Through the study of the Suzuki Philosophy, students gain self-confidence, self-esteem, and a sense of competency. They learn to overcome failure, recognize achievement, and strive for success.
- Every child can learn to play. The pace of learning is completely individual and unique to each child. Suzuki said “Do not hurry. This is a fundamental rule. If you hurry and collapse or tumble down, nothing is achieved. Do not rest in your efforts; this is another fundamental rule. Without stopping, without haste, carefully taking a step at a time forward will surely get you there.”
What to Expect
- Private lessons with the individual teacher occur weekly. They will be 30, 45, or 60 minutes long depending on the student’s age and experience. Students receive feedback and new practice techniques. Parents receive instruction on ways to effectively assist their student’s practice at home.
- Group classes take place during the fall and spring semesters. They are 45 minutes long and arranged by student playing level. When students play with other musicians they are motivated by their peers, learn to support each other’s effort, develop generosity, and create a sense of community.
- Special events are planned 2-4 times each semester. These include solo recitals, group performances (both formal and informal), graduation recitals, and an ice cream social.
